Bush told he is playing into Bin Laden's hands
Al-Qaida may 'reward' American president with strike aimed at keeping him in office, senior intelligence man says

Julian Borger in Washington
Saturday June 19, 2004

The Guardian

A senior US intelligence official is about to publish a bitter condemnation of America's counter-terrorism policy, arguing that the west is losing the war against al-Qaida and that an "avaricious, premeditated, unprovoked" war in Iraq has played into Osama bin Laden's hands.
Imperial Hubris: Why the West is Losing the War on Terror, due out next month, dismisses two of the most frequent boasts of the Bush administration: that Bin Laden and al-Qaida are "on the run" and that the Iraq invasion has made America safer.

In an interview with the Guardian the official, who writes as "Anonymous", described al-Qaida as a much more proficient and focused organisation than it was in 2001, and predicted that it would "inevitably" acquire weapons of mass destruction and try to use them.

He said Bin Laden was probably "comfortable" commanding his organisation from the mountainous tribal lands along the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The Pakistani army claimed a big success in the "war against terror" yesterday with the killing of a tribal leader, Nek Mohammed, who was one of al-Qaida's protectors in Waziristan.

But Anonymous, who has been centrally involved in the hunt for Bin Laden, said: "Nek Mohammed is one guy in one small area. We sometimes forget how big the tribal areas are." He believes President Pervez Musharraf cannot advance much further into the tribal areas without endangering his rule by provoking a Pashtun revolt. "He walks a very fine line," he said yesterday.

Imperial Hubris is the latest in a relentless stream of books attacking the administration in election year. Most of the earlier ones, however, were written by embittered former officials. This one is unprecedented in being the work of a serving official with nearly 20 years experience in counter-terrorism who is still part of the intelligence establishment.

The fact that he has been allowed to publish, albeit anonymously and without naming which agency he works for, may reflect the increasing frustration of senior intelligence officials at the course the administration has taken.

Peter Bergen, the author of two books on Bin Laden and al-Qaida, said: "His views represent an amped-up version of what is emerging as a consensus among intelligence counter-terrorist professionals."

Anonymous does not try to veil his contempt for the Bush White House and its policies. His book describes the Iraq invasion as "an avaricious, premeditated, unprovoked war against a foe who posed no immediate threat but whose defeat did offer economic advantage.

"Our choice of timing, moreover, shows an abject, even wilful failure to recognise the ideological power, lethality and growth potential of the threat personified by Bin Laden, as well as the impetus that threat has been given by the US-led invasion and occupation of Muslim Iraq."

In his view, the US missed its biggest chance to capture the al-Qaida leader at Tora Bora in the Afghan mountains in December 2001. Instead of sending large numbers of his own troops, General Tommy Franks relied on surrogates who proved to be unreliable.

"For my money, the game was over at Tora Bora," Anonymous said.

Yesterday President Bush repeated his assertion that Bin Laden was cornered and that there was "no hole or cave deep enough to hide from American justice".

Anonymous said: "I think we overestimate significantly the stress [Bin Laden's] under. Our media and sometimes our policymakers suggest he's hiding from rock to rock and hill to hill and cave to cave. My own hunch is that he's fairly comfortable where he is."

The death and arrest of experienced operatives might have set back Bin Laden's plans to some degree but when it came to his long-term capacity to threaten the US, he said, "I don't think we've laid a glove on him".

"What I think we're seeing in al-Qaida is a change of generation," he said."The people who are leading al-Qaida now seem a lot more professional group.

"They are more bureaucratic, more management competent, certainly more literate. Certainly, this generation is more computer literate, more comfortable with the tools of modernity. I also think they're much less prone to being the Errol Flynns of al-Qaida. They're just much more careful across the board in the way they operate."

As for weapons of mass destruction, he thinks that if al-Qaida does not have them already, it will inevitably acquire them.

The most likely source of a nuclear device would be the former Soviet Union, he believes. Dirty bombs, chemical and biological weapons, could be home-made by al-Qaida's own experts, many of them trained in the US and Britain.

Anonymous, who published an analysis of al-Qaida last year called Through Our Enemies' Eyes, thinks it quite possible that another devastating strike against the US could come during the election campaign, not with the intention of changing the administration, as was the case in the Madrid bombing, but of keeping the same one in place.

"I'm very sure they can't have a better administration for them than the one they have now," he said.

"One way to keep the Republicans in power is to mount an attack that would rally the country around the president."

The White House has yet to comment publicly on Imperial Hubris, which is due to be published on July 4, but intelligence experts say it may try to portray him as a professionally embittered maverick.

The tone of Imperial Hubris is certainly angry and urgent, and the stridency of his warnings about al-Qaida led him to be moved from a highly sensitive job in the late 90s.

But Vincent Cannistraro, a former chief of operations at the CIA counter-terrorism centre, said he had been vindicated by events. "He is very well respected, and looked on as a serious student of the subject."

Anonymous believes Mr Bush is taking the US in exactly the direction Bin Laden wants, towards all-out confrontation with Islam under the banner of spreading democracy.

He said: "It's going to take 10,000-15,000 dead Americans before we say to ourselves: 'What is going on'

Had a pretty damn good weekend.......Friday nite I caught the Candy Snatchers at Coyote West...ran into a lot of buds Id hadn't seen in a while...........got really trashed (as could be expected) and I think that this was the first Candy Snatcher show that I didnt get kicked out of........
Then Saturday we finally got to see our bros Construkt on the big stage at the Norva......they looked and sounded great........nice pit too (Im still recovering), and again, I ran into some good buds I hadn't seen in a spell......and then it was off to Hell's Kitchen for aftershow cocktails....all in all an AWSOME nite.....
Then came Sunday........I got off like 4 hours earlier that expected, so I spent my newfound free time wisely........by draining the kegs...I planed on going home after a few and maybe hit the rack early......but plans change when yer doing power drinking.......By the time kick off time arrived (some 5 hours and 6 pitchers later)I was pretty intoxicated....but feeling good....deicided to stay and watch the game and Im glad I did.....NOW THAT WAS A GAME!!!......best Super Bowl Ive seen in years (even though I had my money on Carolina..........but oh well, it was an awsome game anyway)
Now all I needed was to get laid........of course , that didnt happen, but it was an awsome weekend anyway.........

    <lj:music>Darling Violetta: Bath ...water ....flowers</lj:music>

Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring......I'd just killed the mouse.
TheXmas lights were on and the stockings hung up,
In case that fat bastard Santa stopped by to say "sup"
The roomies were trippin, all dosed up with 'Cid,
While visions of snossberries flashed in their heads,
And mamma with the dank and my lighter lit,
We'd just sat down to take some bong hits...
When suddenly outside something went amok,
I spilled the bong water and said "What the fuck!?"
Away went the hooka and bowls with a flash,
I raised the couch pillow and then hid my stash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
To the window I went,as the ol lady sat,
And stubed my big toe as I tripped over the cat.
I freaked when I saw what was drawing near,
A tripped out sleigh, pulled by four haggered reindeer!
They missed some power lines, and that got me thinking,
With driving like that,Santa must have been drinking!
Like a bat outta hell, his coursers they came,
And he curused, and screamed, and called them rude names:
"Now, Dasher! you fucker, now, Dancer and Blitzen!
You bastard shape up or you'll wind up like Vixen!"
"Hit that house there and watch those treetops,
And lets make it fast before they call the cops!"
So up to the rooftop, the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of stuff, and the fat bastard too.
As I puled in my head, and ran to get my buds,
Down came St. Nick and he crashed with a thud.
He was dressed all in red, like some jolly old pimp,
And his clothes were all dirty and he walked with a limp.
He had a big bag of shit he had flung on his back,
And I hoped maybe he'd brought me a sack.
His eyes were bloodshot, the ol dude, he looked beat,
He therw the bag down and then took a seat...
He proped up his boots and he took off his mits,
Took a shot from his flask and sighed "Im too old for this shit.....",
I came out from hiding, for I knew what he did need,
And said "Hey Santa, wanna smoke some weed?"
He cracked a smile and his eyes did light up,
"Hell yeah my man, fire that shit up!"
I packed a bowl for Santa, and searched for a light,
Passed the bowl to him and asked "How goes yer night?"
As he smoked he spoke with a voice sure to be heard,
"Dude ,what a fucked up night.....this shit is for the birds!"
We passed the bowl and talked a bit and time it did go by
My shit was dank and soon St Nick and I were pretty high....
"We started off badly.....near Perth down under,
Ran intro some crackhead dingos, who mugged poor Donner!"
"Near Kyoto we lost Prancer, (got hit by passing cars)
Had to leave Cupid in Honk Kong......he came down with SARS"
"Got detained in Islamabad, I thought we'd have to abort....
They thought I might be Bin Laden...but I was way too short......"
"Got shot at over Kabul, cuz no one down there is sane,
I took out Vixen near Moscow... (all the bitch did was complain)"
"Near Baghdad we got lost, much to my dismay,
Stopped in Sadar City to get directions and the fuckers looted my sliegh!!"
"We headed north, to give the 4th I.D. some yuletide cheer,
But I didnt stop at the damn checkpoint, and they fired on the reindeer!"
"Then while in England, the Prime Minister's place I believe,
Got mobbed by some Blair and Bush bashers.....it was time to leave!"
"As I apporched U.S. airspace, the worse was surly over,
But I was wrong and I found that out, a few miles over Dover"
"I was misindentifed on radar, by those damn NORAD clowns,
They sent up some F-16s and tried to shoot my ass down!
"Man thats fucked!" I said to him, between sips of Mt Dew,
"You couldn't pay me enuff to to take yer job ....in one night I'd be through!"
"But I now yer here hanging out" I said,"and we toking on some kind,"
"Word!" said Santa..." Yo, let me hit that shit one mo time........"
He looked at his watch through the pot induced haze,
And said "Oh shit man! Im late........dude I gotta blaze!!"
"Thanks for the buzz man....my hat's off to you....
"And I almost forgot.....I got some shit for you and yer crew...."
He filled up the stockings and left stuff by the tree
And for me two tickets to Sevendust....and the new Nothingface CD!
He finished his Dew, he fingered his nose,
And giving a thumbs up, up the chimney he rose.
He stumbled to his sleigh, and attempted to put on his fuzzy hat and mits
Sat in the cockpit, leaned over to Comet and wisphered,"Man thats some good shit!!"
He started the thing up, and and almost backed into my nieghbor Seth,
And away they all flew like an tweaker on crystal meth
But as they tore down the street,I could swear I heard hime scream:
"Happy Fuckin' Hollidays dudes, and may your Christmas be GREEN!!!

merry friggin xmas yall...........
